NASDI has just been awarded the partial demolition, asbestos abatement and universal
waste removal contract for the former Reynolds Tobacco Generating Station in Winston-Salem,
NC. The R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR), based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
and founded by R. J. Reynolds in 1875, is the second-largest tobacco company in
the U.S. When opened in 1961 -- a $32 million, 790,300-square-foot facility -- it
was considered the world's largest and most modern cigarette-manufacturing plant.
It was announced in 2010 that cigarette manufacturing would cease at the company's
Whitaker Park plant, located in Winston-Salem. Built in 1961, the plant had about
1 million square feet (90,000 m²) of manufacturing space.
